Caracol and Rio On Pools
I've been wanting to go to Caracol since we've gotten here. It seems a bit daunting to get to - 3 hours of, in essence, off roading - where an armed military escort is recommended due to armed bandits close as you get closer to the BZ/Guat border. We braved the road and missed the armed escort but still pressed on. The reward was unbelieveable. Caracol has just been found recently and is still actively being escavated each spring. For this reason, and its remoteness, much of the original carvings/stelae/features are still in the open for people to touch (but you are advised not to). There were some howler monkeys near by when we were on top of Caana. It was very strange to hear them - sounds like big lions fighting.
