Ole Mexico!

In a strange turn of events, all three of the Spiegel's went to Mexico the other week - just not all together. A last minute call from Margarita to say they were going to Mexico for the day if we wanted to join them created some frantic scrambling to find passports, money, and Kevin (who did not have a cell phone on him that morning and he wasn't at Pasquales).

None of us have actually been north of the Ladyville turn off to come home via Burrell Boom so I was looking forward to seeing the 'North'. Let's put it this way. I will no longer be pestering Kevin to take an overnight to the north. I'm a little torn on this as there are two Mayan ruins up by the Corozal bay area but .....

The north is sugar cane area and there was literally close to 100 trucks lined up at 2pm to get into the sugar mill. When we crossed back at 11pm, the trucks were almost gone.

Mexico was a wee bit overwhelming. Grocery stores, paved roads with overpasses, shopping malls, restaurants. Definitely sensory overload.

At the mall, I splurged on both McDonalds and sushi - both of which are not available in Belize. Max didn't much care for the cheeseburger but he ate the fries like there was no tomorrow. I didn't much care for the cheeseburger either but it was interesting to eat it again after having gone more that 14 months without it. Strangely, one does not forget the taste of McDonald's and I can now strike this from my to-do list when back in the States.

The arcade. The scene of the most terrific meltdown Max has ever had. It was after 9pm and he just was not ready to go. A few hits to the head (mine) and some kicks and punches, I finally wrestled Max from the arcade and took him to face a corner in the mall. Eventually he stopped the meltdown but for a brief instant I thought he was going to kick a mall display window and shatter the glass.
Max and I finally walked in the door to our house at 1am with all our purchases in hand. Strangely enough, it was less than I thought I would buy but I was very overwhelmed by the whole experience and I didn't know what was Legal to bring back with us.
In a weird coincidence, Kevin went to Mexico the following Tuesday with Nigel for the Great Cheese Smuggle. Nigel has diplomat plates so border guards are not allowed to look into the car or stop any 'smuggling.' Fresh asparagus. Fresh mushrooms. Authentic chorizo. Jamon Serrano. Fresh poblano and jalapeno peppers. We have been feasting this week!
